Q: What’s the point of this convention? A: To bring Konkani youth together to have fun, discuss our shared issues, and hopefully make new friends.
Q: I’ve heard that these are like marriage markets, is that true? A: As we stated above, the convention is intended for social purposes. While we can’t answer for everyone’s intentions, most people who attend are looking to make new friends and have a good time in a new city, nothing more.
Q: But what if I want to scope out the possibilities for a good soirika? A: Have at it! Just keep in mind that not everyone else shares your intentions, and respect that.
Q: I already have a significant other, so why should I come? A: Congratulations! Why not introduce them to some awesome Konks? Since they already liked one Konkani (you), chances are pretty good they’d enjoy meeting more.
Q: I won’t know anyone at the convention, and I’m kind of shy. A: Everyone will be forced out of their usual cliques. You *will* meet new people. At worst you’ll make some acquaintances, at best you’ll establish great friendships.
Q: I’ve heard about the convention, but I don’t know what goes on at them. A: We’ve got a lot of great things planned, including: eating out at great local restaurants, a fun night out in downtown Chicago, an elegant dinner on a yacht, many icebreakers and team building activities and much, much more.
Q: $95 plus hotel and airfare is kind of steep. What do I get for my money? A: Travel expenses aside, (which should be discounted anyway if you book by July 5th) the registration fee is actually a steal. Five meals, transportation, entertainment, not to mention the boat cruise which normally would set you back almost at much as the registration fee by itself.
Q: But I can’t speak Konkani! A: Khassale? Tukka amchigele yana? Just kidding. Don’t worry, while there are varying levels of fluency among the Konkani youth, this convention will be in English.
Q: I’m not really interested in watching 900 Bharat Natyam performances. A: Neither are we. That’s why it’s not on our itinerary.
Q: Ok, you’ve convinced me. What kind of clothes should I pack? A: We’ll be sending out an email to all the registrants as the date of the convention approaches. For the most part it will be casual, with the exception of the boat cruise.
